“An artist is somebody who produces things that people don’t need to have.”
– Andy Warhol
It’s all very well to fantasize about where we want to go in life but when things don’t go our way, how much disappointment is too much disappointment?
We live in a tough time, people. It’s incredibly image conscious and there’s so much expected out of everybody these days that it’s easy to lash out at ourselves when things go wrong. Yes, it’s important to have aspirations and a desire to make something of ourselves but we can’t expect it all at once.
Immediacy. It’s the philosophy that supports our technological culture.
Slow it down, sweetheart.
Practice that illusive ideology called patience. If you get disappointed know that it’s not forever – there are endless options, you’ve just got to keep on keeping on.
I remember finishing my HSC and thinking – what next? After such a limited amount of life experience, how is anybody supposed to make a ‘be-all-and-end-all’ decision about the rest of their lives? It’s so incredibly stressful, especially when all your friends seem to know exactly what they want to do.
So what?
You’re you and that’s all that matters. Travel – live a little. Experience life and different cultures – you’ll get there. Comparing yourself to such a small group of people is so ridiculous. Form your own opinions and give yourself a well-earned break….
As for those allusive, ‘must-have’ images of success like the perfect body, the perfect partner and the perfect lifestyle – everyone’s different and you should only want things for yourself, not because society tells you it’s right.
Like Andy Warhol said – “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” In order to understand what we want we have to experience things and try to discover what truly makes us happy.
So get out there, be open-minded and experience life for yourself.
Peace,
- C
